Tributes poured in this April for British fashion designer and pop icon Mary Quant (1930-2023), transporting me directly back to my childhood and the visual influences of the 1960s. Flat, bold colors and the organic or geometric designs increasingly popular in this decade were both abundant and influential to me, not only through vibrant, mod textiles, but in the psychedelic pop art of Peter Max and eventually in the animated imagery of the film Yellow Submarine. No surprise then, when at age ten, I asked to paint my bedroom orange, Shocking Orange!
The shapes and patterns of the 1960s have had a lasting impact in my art career, and remembering Mary Quant in April became the catalyst for the Summer 2023 AVIARY birds. Pop art wings and repetitive dots, black and white bodies and extra thick eye liner; it all came together for eight pieces for this wonderful new collection.
A warm THANK YOU to all the collectors who now own these beautiful artworks.
